VIMMA VIMMA Strikes at the Heart of Greenwashing with Their New Single Pestään kädet
The energetic Folk Pop band VIMMA released their new single, Pestään kädet, on Friday 14.2. This violin-hook-driven party banger drips with hypocrisy, empty promises, and the euphoria of wrongdoing—striking straight at the core of greenwashing, without forgetting a touch of self-irony. The song is the second single from their upcoming album, set to be released later this spring.
“It feels like facts no longer matter. Companies destroy nature while marketing themselves as environmentally friendly, and people believe it—because they want to. Pestään kädet was born out of this paradox. The lyrics include things like biodegradable chicken packaging, ethical genocide, and climate-compensated last-minute flights—indulgences that ease the guilt. While writing the song, we were inspired by Greenpeace’s ‘Vuoden huiputus’ (‘Scam of the Year’) contest, which highlights the most outrageous examples of greenwashing. The world is heading towards self-destruction in such an absurd way that you can’t help but laugh at it — and while waiting for the end, the best thing to do is probably to throw a party,” say Eeva Rajakangas and Pessi Jouste about the song and its creation process.
The seven-member VIMMA consists of Eeva Rajakangas (vocals), Pessi Jouste (violin), Roope Jokinen (violin), Kalle Outila (guitar), Aino Kallio (piano), Santeri Kettu (bass) and Vilho Louhivuori (drums). The band’s music is influenced by pop, indie rock, folk music and hip-hop, and the songs are inspired by the climate crisis and the relationship with nature. VIMMA has released two albums so far: Meri ja avaruus (2019) and Tornadon silmässä (2023), the latter of which was nominated in the Critics’ Choice category at the 2023 Emma Gala (Finland’s most prestigious music awards).
